The short answer

There is only one cost you cannot avoid: the Office of the Public Guardian charges £92 to register each LPA. That fee is set by the government and is the same whoever helps you make the document.

Everything else is optional. Making the document itself can be free. Here is how the routes compare.

The three ways to make an LPA, and what they cost

The document you end up with is the same official OPG form in every case. What you are choosing between is who helps you fill it in, and whether anyone looks at your answers before you sign.

When you don't have to pay the £92

Not everyone pays the full registration fee.

• Full exemption: if you receive certain means-tested benefits, such as Income Support, income-based ESA or JSA, Guarantee Credit, or Housing Benefit, the fee can be waived entirely
• Half fee (£46 per LPA): if your gross annual income is under £12,000

The claim goes to the OPG on a form called the LPA120, with evidence of the benefit or income. If you make your LPA with us, we generate the LPA120 for you from your answers, and your estate planner will flag it on your call if it looks like you qualify. What a couple pays

Two people making both types of LPA each need four documents. With us, making all four is free. The registration fees are £368 in total (four LPAs at £92 each) unless one or both of you qualifies for a reduction.

Solicitor quotes for the same four documents commonly run to well over a thousand pounds before the OPG fees. If your circumstances are complicated, that advice may be worth paying for. For most families, it is not the document that needs a professional. It is the checking, and that part does not need to cost anything.

The cost of not making one

If you lose capacity without an LPA, your family's only route is a deputyship through the Court of Protection. That means court fees, usually solicitor fees, an ongoing annual supervision fee, and months of waiting while accounts stay frozen. It reliably costs more than an LPA, takes far longer, and ends with a judge choosing who acts for you.
