How to Apply for Exemption/Reduction

  • Submit with your LPA application

    Tips for Claiming

  • Apply at the same time as your LPA—easier than claiming after
  • Keep evidence recent—within last 12 months
  • Include clear copies—readable photocopies accepted
  • Highlight the key information on lengthy documents
  • Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Not claiming at all

Many people don't know exemptions exist.

    Mistake 2: Wrong evidence

Make sure your proof clearly shows the qualifying benefit or income level.

    Mistake 3: Out-of-date letters

Evidence must be from within the last 12 months.

Mistake 4: Claiming for the wrong benefit

Not all benefits qualify—check the list above.

    What About the Service Fee?

Fee exemptions only apply to the OPG registration fee (£82 per LPA).

If you use a service like myLPA (£74-140), you'll still need to pay for that service. However, this is still much cheaper than solicitor fees (£300-1,000+).

    Couples and Fee Exemptions

If both of you are creating LPAs:

    • Each person claims based on their own circumstances
    • One partner may qualify while the other doesn't
    • Total savings can be significant
Example: Both partners get income exemption = £0 registration fees Both create both LPA types = 4 LPAs registered free (saving £328)
